Dependent Tuition Waiver

Posted on January 18, 2022 by utaaup

UT-AAUP faculty are reminded that the Collective Bargaining Agreements’ (CBAs) provision on dependent tuition waiver overrides any UT policy. For example, faculty dependents under the CBAs may register as part-time or full-time students whereas the UT policy requires other employees to attend on a full-time basis. There are other differences.

At the start of each semester, the UT-AAUP regularly receives and resolves faculty complaints on the dependent tuition waiver.

Please contact the UT-AAUP at staff.utaaup@gmail.com, attention Tim Brakel, Don Wedding, Kim Nigem, or Michael Kistner on any questions concerning dependent tuition waiver.

There are always rumors that the tuition waiver for faculty and faculty dependents will be amended or cut. We were told two years ago that the total tuition waiver budget for all employees and dependents is about $10million. The UT-AAUP faculty share is about $1million. These figures are very small compared to the total General Fund (Academic) budget of about $420million and the total UT institutional budget of about $800million. It would be an insignificant cost savings to cut or trim this relatively small employee benefit that is so important to many employees, especially lower-paid employees in the CWA. It is also an important benefit to many faculty and their dependents and is important in recruiting employees at all levels. The Postel Administration would be well advised to make the UT policy mirror the UT-AAUP CBAs, not vice versa.
